Randy Ostrander, Broker/Owner of Lake & Lodge Realty in Big Rapids, Michigan.
A note on the Mecosta area: Big Rapids and the surrounding area is a great place to live. With the convenience of major stores to shop and
the personal touch of the local merchants almost every need is within reach. Both City and County Police Departments are located in town and a full time Fire Department with a brand new facility you can feel safe at night. And with Mecosta County Medical Center(Congrats on making the Top 100 hospitals in the nation in 2005) here as well as several family and specialty doctors your are never far from help if you need it. Every school in the Big Rapids district has met rigorous national standards for quality established by the North Central Association. Big Rapids continues to be one of a select group of school districts state-wide accredited in all schools K-12. Ferris and the thousands of new students every year keep a freshness to the already diverse population. Even with the City of Big Rapids growing every minute you can go 5 miles in almost any direction and be in the country.
Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking or tubing on the mighty Muskegon River are just a few of the areas many things to do. No matter what season there is plenty to do for everyone. There are many public access sites and lots of state land around the area to allow everyone a chance to play. One of the areas treasures is the Northend Riverside Park. It has a large parking area, two
pavilions capable of holding the largest of families, children's playground, horseshoe pits, volley ball courts all connected to a walk/bike path that goes all the way through Hemlock Park, where you'll find our "Playscape" and then walk along the Muskegon River to Maple Street. On the other end it connects to the "Rails to Trails". There are several spots along the path to stop and enjoy or fish for awhile. If you haven't checked it out yet, GO TODAY!!! If you need a place to stay, check out my area links page under lodging. There are several Big Rapids area businesses ready to serve you. Come check us out for a weekend and I think you'll agree Mecosta County is a great place to visit and an awesome place to live.

RAPIDS "TO DO"
Here are Ten Must Do's When in Big Rapids
Located about 50 miles North of Grand Rapids, Mi just off Exit 139 on US131
lies a great place to live. You call it Big Rapids, I call it home. If you ever are in the Big Rapids area there are a number of ways to spend a day. One of my favorites is looking at houses with me. lol. Ok for some that may
not be on your agenda, so here is a list of 10 things you must do when visiting Big Rapids:
Check out our Riverwalk. You can spend a few minutes or pretty much an entire afternoon walking
Riverwalk. Starts at Maple Street Bridge and goes over 2 1/2 miles of paved
walk paths along the Muskegon River. Ends at Northend Riverside Park which is
our number #2 of must do's.
Find a hidden treasure. Way out to the end of Fourth Street lies
Northend Riverside Park. Besides your usual picnic area with pavilions there is a
children's playground, volley ball and horseshoe pits as well as an 18 hole disc golf course
and a fishing pier. A must do indeed.
Tour the Michigan Artwalk on the Ferris Campus. This is a great way to spend an afternoon. There are over
25 pieces of artwork on the tour with renown artists like Robert Barnum
showing their masterpieces.
If you have an extra bit of time try the driving range or a round of golf
at Katke. Excellent course and open to the public. Right around $22 for 18 holes and if you are in a time crunch
go ahead and get a cart.
One of the most visited areas in Big Rapids has to be
Hemlock Park. Softball diamond, tennis courts and PlayScape for the kids all set on the
banks of the Muskegon River. What a great way to spend the day.
Speaking of the Muskegon River, a day of tubing is just what the doctor
ordered to help relax. Hundreds of people hit the water every day in the
summer for the ultimate river venture.
When you are checking out Ferris you should take a tour of the
Card Wildlife Center where you can see up close around 180 wildlife specimens in the 5,000 sq ft building.
While Downtown stop into Schuberg's Bar for lunch. The
second you walk in you feel like you belong. Great little family bar with an
awesome bowl of chili or a great Flat Iron Steak.
I may have saved the best for last. You must see the remodel at ArtWorks downtown. Three
floors of local artists along with a dance studio and pottery class.
If you need help finding any of the above feel free to give me a call and I
will guide you in from wherever you are. I truly hope you enjoy Big Rapids as
much as I do.
